General objectives of medical studies
Acquire the scientific and psycho-social concepts necessary for understanding the genesis, the clinic, and the methods of investigation and treatment of common diseases.
Acquire the clinical knowledge necessary to solve within defined competence limits, the health problems common in our country, on the somatic and psychic, preventive and curative levels.
Acquire the clinical knowledge necessary to manage the most frequent medical and surgical emergencies.
Acquire, as part of the training in the clinical disciplines taught, basic skills relating to relational and professional attitudes, techniques (observation, patient care, etc.) and the management of common ailments encountered during trainings.
Assess at the level of Public Health in Tunisia, the prevalence and severity of a health problem as well as its risk factors and indicate the possibilities of preventing it by considering feasibility and effectiveness.
Develop interpersonal skills based on respect for ethics with patients and their family members.
Control the information and communication tools in medical practice.
Be in control of your learning by developing self-training skills.

Studies for the national medical doctor’s degree last 8 years
for family medicine at 11 years of age for the specialty.
Medical studies include 3 cycles:
A first cycle of medical studies (P.C.E.M) which lasts 2 years,
A second cycle of medical studies (D.C.E.M) which lasts four to four years,
A third cycle of medical studies (T.C.E.M) which leads to:
- Either to obtain the national diploma of doctor of medicine and to become qualified to practice family medicine after two years of training,
- Or when obtaining the diploma of specialist doctor after 4 to 5 years of training depending on the course of the chosen medical specialty.
The first cycle of medical studies (P.C.E.M)
It comes in the form of a teaching. Its objectives are to prepare the student for the acquisition in particular of pre-clinical knowledge, skills and attitudes allowing him to follow the course of the second cycle of medical studies (D.C.E.M).
The first cycle of medical studies (P.C.E.M.) includes teaching relating to:
- the global approach to health,
- the health status of the healthy individual
- nature, origin, development,
- the expression and outcome of a health problem,
- the methodology for solving health problems,
- the philosophical, ethical, psychological and sociological foundations of health,
- the basics of communication,
- studying the signs of disease (semiology).
The second cycle of medical studies (D.C.E.M.)
It takes place over three years of internship and one year of internship internship (D.C.E.M 4) which includes teaching – learning in the faculty of medicine and in internship structures
This second cycle is devoted to clinical training and the teaching of specific pathologies from a scientific, clinical and medico-social perspective.
The teachings of the D.C.E.M allow the student to acquire the professional skills necessary to be able to meet the health needs of the population on the preventive, curative, palliative and rehabilitation levels.
For this purpose, the D.C.E.M program includes lessons on:
- The clinical and therapeutic management of common pathologies affecting the human organism, whatever their origin,
- Medico-social aspects of health in terms of prevention, epidemiology, economics and sociology of health.
- Legal, ethical and organizational aspects of health and the medical profession.
The internship or D.C.E.M 4 has three internship periods of four months each, one in medicine and the other in surgery. The third internship period for interns in family medicine is necessarily carried out either in obstetric gynecology or in pediatrics.
The third cycle of medical studies (TCEM)
a. Family medicine
Students who have validated their entire second cycle of medical studies and who:
- Immediately opted for family medicine at the end of the third year of the second cycle of medical studies (D.C.E.M 3), or
- Are no longer candidates for the medical residency competition,
- Or have successfully passed the residency competition and who ultimately opts for family medicine. These students will have priority when choosing the internship service,
- Or have opted for training in family medicine after completing a maximum of two years of a residency course in another specialty.
Family medicine interns undergo two years of training, divided as follows:
- 1. One year of training in university services
- 2. One year of training in first and second line health structures.
b. Specialization in medicine
Specialization in medicine takes place after obtaining the residency competition.
The residency lasts from 4 to 5 years and the residents carry out 6-month internships in hospital services.
Preamble
The purpose of this charter is to establish a regulatory framework for the organization of hospital internships, which are a cornerstone and essential component of the training and validation of the curriculum for students at the Faculty of Medicine of Tunis. The FMT is committed to providing students with optimal conditions for the smooth conduct of their internships. It also undertakes to standardize and enhance training to achieve the predefined internship objectives.
Professional Secrecy and Patient Respect
The medical student commits to respect the patient and the professional secrecy inherent in the practice of medicine. Students are reminded that access to the medical record (whether in paper or computerized form) and the information it contains is only permitted for medical and paramedical staff directly involved in the patient’s care. In case of breach of confidentiality, the student may face sanctions, including legal penalties. Absolute respect for all patients is a fundamental obligation, which must be present in all interactions or communications with them, regardless of their gender, age, origin, mentality, or beliefs.
Respect for the Host Institution
During training, the student must adhere to the internal regulations of the institution and ensure ethical conduct towards all members of the medical, paramedical, and administrative care team.
Internship Logbooks/Portfolios
The training objectives are defined in the training logbooks/portfolios. The student is responsible for maintaining these records properly.
On-call duty
On-call duty is an integral part of clinical training, and is required to validate the medical curriculum. They must be carried out by the student him/herself, respecting the agreed duration. Failure to comply with this rule renders the student medically and legally liable.
Assiduity
Assiduity at trainings means physical presence and involvement in training clinic activities. All absences must be duly justified. The rate of absence, even if justified, must not exceed the limit authorized in FMT’s internal regulations.
Dress code
For reasons of hygiene and respect for medical ethics, cleanliness and personal and attire sobriety are required. The dress code for internships includes wearing a clean, buttoned white coat and displaying an ID badge.
Right to claim
Students can submit any complaints about their trainings via the FMT platform and/or website.
